The park encompasses the mountain’s forests, moorlands, alpine desert, and glaciers, each with its own unique ecosystems and scenic beauty. The lower slopes are cloaked in lush rainforests, home to wildlife like blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, bushbucks, and countless bird species. As visitors ascend, they pass through heath and moorland zones where strange and beautiful flora like giant groundsels and lobelias grow. At higher elevations, the landscape turns into a stark alpine desert, ultimately leading to the icy summit of Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa.
There are several established routes to the summit, including the Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, Shira, Umbwe, and Northern Circuit routes. Each offers a different level of challenge, scenery, and experience, with trekking durations ranging from 5 to 9 days depending on acclimatization needs and route choice.
The best time to climb Kilimanjaro is during the dry seasons, from January to March and June to October. These periods offer clearer skies, better trail conditions, and safer climbing experiences. However, even in ideal conditions, the mountain’s weather can be unpredictable with cold temperatures, rain, and even snow possible at higher altitudes.
Mount Kilimanjaro National Park is easily accessible from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), located between Arusha and Moshi. From Moshi town the primary base for climbers it’s just a 45-minute drive to the park’s main gates, including Marangu Gate and Machame Gate, depending on the selected route.
